Description

Soft-paste porcelain, decorated with an underglaze blue scale ground, and reserves painted in enamels and gold with chrysanthemums and other flowers

Soft-paste porcelain (presumed steatitic), decorated with an underglaze blue scale ground, reserves painted in blue, green, yellow and red enamels, and gilding. The globular body stands on a footring and has a short cylindrical neck, an upward-tilting spout, and a D-shaped handle. In the wall behind the spout there are five holes to emit the tea. The low domed cover has a ventilation hole and an applied moulded knob in the form of a flower on a stem with two leaves; the underside of its rim and the exterior of the flange which fits inside the neck of the pot are unglazed. On each side of the pot there is one large shaped reserve flanked by two narrower shaped reserves framed by gold scrolls, each filled with different Japanese-style flowering plants including chrysanthemums. On the shoulder there are six small shaped reserves filled with similar floral motifs, and one on the underside of the spout which also has a white area round its mouth, decorated with red and gold foliage. On the handle there is a narrow gold-edged reserve with a central gold star flanked by short strokes of graduated size. The cover is decorated to match with two large and one smalle reserve. The flower knob has a yellow centre and red-tipped petals.
