Description

Soft-paste porcelain teapot, painted underglaze in blue probably with ‘Mansfield’ pattern, and later clobbered in red and gold.

Soft-paste porcelain painted underglaze in blue, and later clobbered in red and gold. The globular pot stands on a footring and has a short cylindrical neck, a slightly curved upward-tilting spout, and a D-shaped loop handle. In the wall behind the spout there is a circle of five holes to emit the tea. The low domed cover has a ventilation hold and an applied knob in the shape of a flower on a stalk with two small leaves; the underside of its rim and the outside of the flange which fits inside the neck of the pot are unglazed. The sides are decorated with a floral design known as 'Mansfield pattern', and there is a border of scrolls and diaper panels encircling the shoulder. There are floral sprays on the top and underside of the spout, and a stem down the back of the handle. Red and gold flowers and gold outlines have been added over all. The cover is decorated to match.

Note

This Worcester teapot was initially decorated only underglaze in blue and was 'clobbered', probably at a later date, that is it had red enamel and gilding applied and fired one after the other in a decorating studio outside the factory, possibly in London. This was intended to imitate Japanese Imari porcelain.
