Description

Soft-paste porcelain teapot painted underglaze in blue, and clobbered in red and gold

Soft-paste porcelain, painted underglaze in blue, and clobbered in blue and gold. The globular pot stands on a footring, and has a short cylindrical neck, a slightly curved spout, and a D-shaped handle with a longitudinal ridge. The wall behind the spout has a circle of six holes with one more in the centre to emit the tea. The domed cover has a narrow rim, a ventilation hole and a cone-shaped knob; the underside of the rim and the flange which fits inside the pot are partially unglazed. Both sides of the pot are decorated in blue with an Oriental landscape with buildings, a bridge, and flowering plants, and a narrow diaper border around the shoulder. The spout has a dainty red floral spray on its underside and a formal leaf motif on the top of by the mouth. Down the back of the handle there are small leaves, flower heads and dots. The cover has three small landscape motifs, and a border to match the shoulder. The top of the knob is decorated with a red star or flowerhead.
