Description

Soft-paste porcelain teapot painted on both sides in polychrome enamels with two Chinese women and a child in a garden

Soft-paste porcelain tea pot, painted in blue, green, yellow, pinkish-purple, red, brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The globular body stands on a footring and has a short cylindrical neck, a slightly curved, upward tilting spout, and a loop handle. In the wall behind the spout there are five holes in a circle to emit the tea. The low domed cover has a ventilation hole and a knob in the shape of a flower on a stem with two small leaves. The underside of its rim, and the exterior of the flange which fits inside the neck of the pot are unglazed. Both sides of the body are decorated with the same Chinese garden scene with a woman standing by a fence, and a woman and a boy standing beside a table. On the cover there is a fence beside a curving tree, and an insect. The exterior of the knob's petals are red. Gold bands encircle the neck and edge of the cover, and there is a gold leaf on the back of the handle and two leaves on stems on top of the spout.
