Description

Soft-paste porcelain teapot decorated with a scale blue ground, and reserves painted in blue, green, and red enamels and gold with chrysanthemums and wheatsheaves

Soft-paste porcelain, moulded, with applied handle, spout, and knob, decorated with a blue scale ground, painting in blue, green, red, and black enamels, and gilded. The oval pot has a curving shoulder, an upward tilting spout, and a harp-shaped handle with a rounded kick at the lower end. The oval cover is slightly domed and has a ventilation hole and an oval urn-shaped knob. The pot and cover are decorated with scale blue grounds, and reserves framed by gold scrolls and oval beads. Both sides of the pot have a large shaped reserve, one containing Japanese-style flowers and wheatsheaves, and the other flowers and an insect. On either side of these there are narrow shaped reserves containing a flowering plant, and on the shoulder, two smaller triangular reserves containing half a flower and foliage. There is an oval reserve containing a floral spray under the spout. The cover is decorated to match. The back of the handle is painted in gold with a feathery leaf, and there are gold bands round the mouth, foot, and end of the spout, and round the edge of the cover and knob, which also has strokes of gold radiating from its apex.
