Description

Soft-paste porcelain teapot painted in polychrome enamels on both sides with a Chinese man holding a bird, a boy and a lady seated beside a table in a garden

Soft-paste porcelain (steatitic), thrown, glazed and painted in green, yellow, pink, red, brown, grey, and black enamels and gilt. The globular pot stands on a footring, and has a short cylindrical neck, a slightly curved, upward-tilting spout, and a D-shaped handle with a longitudinal ridge. Behind the spout there are six holes to emit the tea. The domed cover has a ventilation hole and a knob in the form of a flower on a stalk with two leaves. The underside of its rim, and the exterior of the flange which fits inside the neck of the pot are unglazed. The two sides of the pot are decorated with the same scene. On the left, a Chinese man holding a bird stands beside a tree. A small boy approaches him and points towards the bird. On the right, a Chinese woman, holding a tobacco pipe, is seated beside a table on which there is a book. Around the handle there is a green and brown bank or rock. The cover is decorated with a table beside a rock and a tree, and with a flowering bush. The knob is pink with green leaves. Gilding has been used sparingly on the costume of the figures, and there are narrow gold and black bands rund the shoulder of the pot and the outer edge of the cover.
