Soft-paste porcelain (steatitic), thrown, with applied moulded handle, spout, and knob, glazed, and painted in blue, turquoise, green, mauve, red, reddish-brown, and black enamels, and gilt. The globular pot stands on a footring and has a cylindrical neck, slightly-curved upward-tilting spout, and a D-shaped handle with a longitudinal ridge. there are five holes behind the spout to emit the tea. The low domed cover has a ventilation hole and a knob in the shape of a flower on a stalk withtwo leaves. The underside of its rim, and the outer edge of the flange which fits inside the pot is unglazed. One side of the pot is decorated with a Chinese vendor with two oval parcels on pans suspended from a pole approaching a Chinese man, woman and child, and on the other, with a Chinese woman at a window and another standing outside in a garden. The figures are distinguished by having curved quiffs of hair on top of their heads. The areas around the handle and spout are decorated with red scrolls and red and black stylized flowers and foliage, and there is a small red and black floral spray on the top of the spout. On the back of the handle in red is a formal flowerhead with short lines and dots on either side of it. The cover is decorated with a fence and a tree within red scrolls and with two arrangements of red and black flowers and foliage. The knob has a green centre and red petals.
