Description

Bronze hand mirror with scenes of nymphs bathing

Bronze, cast, and chased, inset with an oval mirror with a bevelled edge. The narrow wedge-shaped rustic handle is hollow on the reverse and encloses a nude figure of a woman standing holding her hands behind her head. The handle is separated from the mirror by a narrow studded collar. The mirror back is decorated in shallow relief with three nymphs bathing, one of whom grasps the right arm of a young man who is kneeling on the bank and bending down towards her. Behind him there is a broad squat jug, and a taller urn or ewer is partially visible next to his left arm. The scene is enclosed by a narrow rope edging.
