Leaf from a Book of Hours

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 160 x 103 mm (95 x 57 mm), 3 long lines on recto and 21 long lines ruled in pale brown ink on verso
CONTENTS: Hours of the Holy Spirit (continued on the verso)
DECORATION: Miniature with arched top, framed in gold: Pentecost with the seated Virgin Mary surrounded by the apostles and a dove descending with a full-border of pink and blue acanthus sprays on a gold ground, incorporating floral motifs, strawberries, two birds, a butterfly and a seated dog for the Hours of the Holy Spirit (recto).
ORNAMENTATION: One-sided, vertical border in the outer margin of pink and blue acanthus and floral sprays on gold ground, incorporating floral motifs, strawberries and two birds (verso); grey and white initial [D, 3 ll.] on pink and gold ground, enclosing sprays of blue and white pansies (recto); foliate initials [1-2 ll.] in maroon and gold on blue grounds, blue and white on maroon grounds, and white and gold on maroon grounds, one with a fly and another with the head of a goat in the bowls; line fillers of white and gold foliate motifs on blue and maroon grounds, and one in brown and gold in the form of a branch (verso).
