PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, miniature including corner medallions 213 x 135 mm (frame excluding medallions 194 x 117 mm), inlaid in a modern parchment leaf 250 x 170 mm
DECORATION: Full-page miniature on gold ground ornamented with incised patterns, punched dots and red painted dots, featuring two mandorlas on a red diapered ground, with blue inner frame ornamented in black with red dots, and gold outer frame outlined in black: Christ in Majesty (above) enthroned, trampling on a lion and a dragon, surrounded by Evangelists’ symbols in medallions: seated angel with scroll MATHEUS, eagle with scroll IOHANES, lion with scroll M[A]RCUS and ox with scroll LUCAS, and King David (below) enthroned, playing the harp, accompanied by two musicians (one with a viol and the other a psaltery), depicted in two medallions in the lower border.

Thomas of Philadelphia; Dr A.S.W. Rosenbach (1876-1952); purchased from him by Sydney Cockerell in 1920 for Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968); his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 7 June 1932, lot 11; withdrawn before the sale at Sydney Cockerell’s initiative and purchased for the Museum by the National Art Collections Fund in 1932.
