Jar. Buff stoneware, thrown, white slip, painted and incised underglaze in iron-brown, firing crack. The high shouldered, wide-mouthed jar, with slightly everted footrim and flat, recessed base, is decorated with a border of alternate leaves and flowers between brown lines circling the shoulders, below which are painted alternate branches with leaves and larger flowers with sgraffito details within a lined border. The slip stops unevenly towards the base. The white slip inside is uneven and pitted on the base.
History note: Purchased from Franck, February 1921, for £15.0s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
