Description

Wide-mouthed jar. Buff stoneware, thrown, white slip cut and incised under clear glaze. The deep bowl with vertical rim has a wide, rounded body tapering to a recessed base incised with a spiralling line. The rim is of white slip, whilst the rest of the body is is decorated in sgraffito with white, scrolling foliage on buff ground. The border above the foot is decorated with white lotus type leaves on buff ground. (Carved through white slip to darker body with scrolling peony and clear glaze).

History note: Purchased possibly from Puttick & Simpson, 10th December 1923, for £25.10.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
