Meiping bottle
Meiping bottle. Grey stoneware, thrown and turned, covered in white slip, painted in iron black under clear glaze. The bottle is ovoid, with a tapering body and sloping shoulders. It has a small, cylindrical neck with uneven mouth rim, and a low, widely flaring foot and deep, recessed base. The glaze is unevenly spread over the footrim. The cream and glazed body is decorated in brown with flowers and birds on the neck, scrolling lotus in cream on an iron-black ground on the shoulders, and birds and foliage within a panel on one side of the vase, and a rabbit, bird and foliage in a panel on the other side. A band of birds and scrolls circles above the foot.
History note: Purchased from Callow, July 1918, for £8.0s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
