Description

Double gourd ewer with weasel handle. Hard-paste porcelain, painted in iron-red, green, turquoise, yellow and black; traces of gilding round foot. Short neck, double gourd ewer resting on a low tapered foot with flat, recessed, glazed base. Iron-red serpentine spout joined to the upper lobe by an S-shaped stretcher, and handle in the form of a rat. The upper lobe is painted with two quatrefoil panels reserved on a lattice ground; the waist has two quatrefoil square panels with pendant decoration and the lower lobe has four quatrefoil panels and chrysanthemum heads reserved on a lattice ground.

History note: Purchased from Shimizu, 15 April 1930, for £12.0s.0d; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
