Description

Baluster vase with lion masks. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze-blue. The vase has a trumpet neck with a deep, straight-sided mouth rim. The shoulders are moulded with lion masks below a central rib at the neck. It has a rounded body, waisted and splaying to a vertical sided foot, with a slightly recessed, unglazed base with red, sandy deposits. The trumpet neck is decorated with stiff leaves, the shoulders with cloud bands between moulded lion masks, and the body with The three friends (prunus, pine and bamboo), above a border of rectangular lappets at the waist and scroll border on the splayed foot.

History note: Purchased from Sotheby's, 6 June 1935, Charles E. Russell Sale, for £4.10s.0d (as Song), Lot 49; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
