Baluster jar
Baluster jar. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze blue. The jar has a slightly everted mouth rim on a short neck. Its rounded body tapers to a high foot with deep, flat, recessed base. A leaf motif decorates the neck, whilst the shoulders are decorated with four panels enclosing flowering peach reserved on a diaper background. The body is decorated with a rocky, river landscape scene with three geese and shrubs and bamboo spray, beneath a scroll border.
History note: Purchased from Sotheby's, April 25 1933, Stephen Winkworth Collection, for £5.0s.0d, Lot 120 ; Henry Scipio Reitlinger (d. 1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
