Description

Square section baluster jar and cover with wooden stand. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze blue. The square section vase has a short neck, rounded mouth lip, and rounded body that tapers to a straight foot with flat, recessed, glazed base. The domed square section cover has an angled, bud-shaped finial. The jar is painted on all sides with five-claw dragons, phoenixes and the eight precious emblems below a border of ruyi head lappets around the shoulders and scrolls on the neck. The cover is painted with the eight precious emblems and cloud scrolls.
As a pair with C.716.2 & A & B-1991.

History note: Purchased from Sotheby's, 25-28 April 1933, Stephen D. Winkworth Sale, for £11.0s.0d, Lot 175; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
