Description

Eight-lobed double gourd vase. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze blue. The neck is moulded in eight lobes and painted with a band of scrolling peony heads. The lobed, upper body is painted with scrolling peonies with a similar band is round the waist. The lower lobe is painted with scrolling peonies and tendrils above a border of petals and blue lines. The base is flat, recessed, and unglazed.

History note: Purchased from Sotheby's, 27 October 1933, Reginald Le May Collection, for £1.0s.0d, part Lot 71; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
