Description

Baluster jar. Hard-paste porcelain painted in underglaze blue. The jar is moulded in eight lobes, with a short neck, rounded, sloping shoulders tapering to the foot, and a flat, recessed, glazed base. The neck has a key-pattern border, and the shoulders have a lappet border, The body is decorated all-over with `the three friends' pattern (prunus, pine and bamboo) and birds in flight.

History note: Purchased from Sotheby's, Stephen Winkworth Collection, 25.4.1933, £5.0s.0d, Lot 120; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
