Massive bath or fish bowl. Dark stoneware, hand-built, covered in white slip, modelled in relief on the outside, with green-glaze on the inside, and brown-glaze on the outside. Heavy oval basin with wide, flat rim, decorated on the exterior with four panels, the two at either end containing bamboo in landscape, one containing two cockerels and a flower, and one containing two horses with a tree, in thick, raised, cream slip and brown glaze. Each panel is surrounded by geometric borders.
History note: Purchased from Pratt, June 1919, for £35.0s.0d; lent to the Victoria & Albert Museum, 1919 and returned 1986; H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
