Description

An envelope with a hand-written address to: "Miss Florence Wilson / 24 Grand Parade / St Leonards on Sea". The postmark states: "Hastings / Feb 13 / 63". There is a red one penny stamp affixed at the upper right corner. On the verso is an inscription in graphite written Catherine Parson's hand which states: 'Dates between 1859 / 63'. This is one of three envelopes addressed to Florence Wilson found in album P.14344. See P.14344-R-27 and P.14344-R-29. See also valentine cards P.14344-R-22 and P.14344-R-23 and probably three others. See also P.14397-R, which was taken from this album and is now loose. An inscription in graphite written on the album leaf below P.14344-R-22 and 23 in Catherine Parson's hand, states: 'These five valentines were sent between the years 1859-63 by Dr. Glaisher's sister to her school friend Mrs Florence Wilson, who gave them, with other valentines, to Dr Glaisher for his collection in 1925.'. Catherine Parsons was a close friend of Glaisher, especially towards the end of his life, and undertook to mount and arrange his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 to the Summer of the following year and beyond. See letters from Glaisher to Parsons held at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Glaisher's sister was called, Cecilia Appellina Glaisher (1845-1932). The Glaisher family often spent their holidays in Hastings. See: Hunt, J.L., 'J. W. L. Glaisher, FRS, ScD (1848-1928) (obituary)', _Quarterly Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society_, Vol. 37, p.743, March 1996.
