Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Lace-paper with a paper 'book' affixed at the centre, the 'front cover' design featuring a glazed, chromolithograph of flowers with gilt detail. The 'book' opens to reveal the conclusion of a message written on blue paper and originally perhaps also a circular image, which has been torn from the paper. A circular impression is visible on the backing paper below the torn, blue paper. A hand-written inscription in red ink at upper centre: "Dear - - - - - - - / I swear to love you dearly / and am ready - (inscription continued inside the decorated book) to kiss / the Book at any / time." At lower centre is a further hand-written inscription in blue ink: "Thus may we be / A couple of ducks". A collage of cut-out and hand-coloured wood-engravings of a pair of ducks with cut-paper leaves and weed and watercolour painting of water.
