Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Comic valentine; A hand-coloured woodcut of a male figure printed onto a large leaf of thin wove paper. A grotesque male character is depicted who wears a pair of thick-rimmed gold spectacles which magnify his eyes and whose cheeks are flushed bright red. He stands with his legs wide apart and takes a pinch of snuff from an open pot with his right hand. He wears a gold and ruby ring on the little finger of his right hand. A verse is printed below in sloping script: "I'm call'd Mr Slyboots my Goggles are Killing / Then marry me for I know you are willing / So come along Valentine make no delay / I'll purchase the ring we'll be married today". Watermark: WHATMAN / 1822. An inscription in graphite at upper left corner: "Rare / 1822".
