Valentine card
Publisher: S. Marks & Sons
Comic valentine. A hand-coloured woodcut on thin wove paper which has been cut out and pasted onto white wove paper, the verso of P.14345-R-17. The image shows a Carpenter hammering a nail into the back of a young woman's bonnet. The woman is dressed fashionably in a hooped skirt and with the hemline raised to show her ankles. A printed verse below: "My dear Mr Carpenter, will you have the kindness to / Fasten my bonnet on with a small tack or two. / Do it gently, there's a good man! / To put it in gently is my design: / But you'll not suit me for a Valentine". London: Marks & Sons, printed lower left.
