Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A hand-coloured lithograph on 4to-sized ivory wove paper with an embossed lace border. A hand-coloured lithographed vignette at the centre shows a couple arm in arm in a garden being led by the figure of Hymen, carrying a flaming torch in his left hand, towards a temple decorated with a garland of flowers and emblazoned with a heart. A lithographed verse is printed below: "In that Temple, there in view / I will pledge my troth to you ..." A watermark: "W&J Harris / Turkey Mill / 1843". Inscriptions in graphite on the recto: "1843" [upper right] / "No 11" [upper left]. An inscription in graphite on the album leaf to the right: "1843". P.14346-R-14 is one of a series of hand-coloured lithographs that were produced in this style. See also P.14346-R-12, a duplicate and P.14414-R-L8. The Museum of London holds a different number from the series: A28549/38, which shows a couple underneath a tree garlanded with flowers, a Cupid beside them and a church in the background.
