Description

An ornate, gilded lithographed border design of entwined flowers, leaves and love knots with overprinting (slightly out of register) of blue and red on quarto-sized ivory wove paper. At the centre is a hand-coloured lithographed scene of a couple wearing late 18th-century costume sitting underneath a tree reading a book, a spaniel beside them. A printed verse in small script above and below: "When next we meet let this our pleasure be / Beneath the shade of some wide-spreading tree ...". Much of the back paper and front paper are stuck together, but what is visible of the inside pages is blank. The remains of white stickers with a printed red border are found on the verso. These stickers match those used to affix the adjacent envelope, P.14346-R-22 into the album. The presence of the stickers and the proximity of the envelope within the album suggests that this valentine probably originated in (or at least was bought with) the envelope, P.14346-R-22.
