Valentine card

A hand-coloured woodcut on thin wove paper. A circular 'frame' of flowers and leaves with partial hand-colouring. Inside, Cupid is depicted in a waterborne chariot harnessed to a pair of swans which are tethered to a pair of birds fluttering above. Cupid holds his bow and arrow in his left hand and a sealed letter in his right. Below the frame: [Printed by E. LLOYD, 30, Curtain Road, Shoreditch] and below this a printed verse: "Hast thou mark'd the mazy stream, / By the moonlight's silver beam? ...". An inscription in graphite, upper centre: "9d" [9 pence]. The inside pages are blank. From a series published by Lloyd. See also: P.14346-R-32; P.14346-R-33; P.14346-R-34. According to information available at www.edwardlloyd.org, 'Lloyd was registered as a printer in the Middlesex Sessions Records in 1838 at Broad St and Cumberland Place, Curtain Rd, an address that no longer exists'.
