Description

A hand-coloured lithograph on thin, white wove paper, the backing paper mostly cut away. A couple stands beside a fireplace in an interior, the male figure holding the hand of the female. A picture of Cupid drawing his bow hangs above the fireplace. A fire blazes in the hearth and a church can be seen in the distance through the window behind the couple on the right. The hand-colouring is quite basic and the wash applied to the face and hand of the male figure has an odd opaque quality to it. Printed at lower left: "R. Canton, London, E.C.". A printed verse below the image: "Oh, could you but read my heart, / You'd find it both constant and true, / and more than that, dearest one, / O'erflowing with love for you." A hand-written inscription in graphite at lower centre: "The Proposal".
