Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
A 4to-sized sheet of thin, white wove paper printed with a decorative woodcut border, which has been delicately tinted with wash. At the centre is a hand-coloured woodcut of the head and shoulders of a man within a heart-shaped border of entwined flowers and leaves. The heart is surmounted with a woodcut illustration of a church. Printed in letterpress below the image: LONDON J.L. MARKS and a verse: "Absent from thee, how time its course delays / Minutes like hours and hours lag on for days ; ...". The paper has been folded twice both vertically and horizontally. From a series. The Museum of London holds a similar example published by Marks & Sons and probably from the same series as P.14346-R-54. See: 34.170/1105, which has been dated, 1851-1860.
