Pensive Beauty Valentine card

A hand-coloured lithograph on yellow-tinted laid paper with red edging. A vignette of a couple in an interior, the gentleman holding the lady's right hand. A church is seen through a window on the left. The title below: PENSIVE BEAUTY and a printed verse: "When first the pensive downcast look / Usurps the boisterous joy of youth, / Deem not that 'tis the heart is sad / Ah! no 'tis but the trace of Love ...". The verse is entwined with the stems and flowers of the liburnum plant, with LIBURNUM YELLOW printed across a red ribbon below the verse at lower centre. The inside pages are blank. From a series. See also: P.14346-R-58; P.14346-R-59; P.14346-R-60 and P.14346-R-62. An example from the same series printed on yellow-tinted paper is held at the Museum of London, see 34.170/936. It has been dated, 1860-1880.
