Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Postcard-style valentine featuring a hand-painted scene of a castle on a rocky island, water in the middleground. This is probably a view of Mont St. Michel in Normandy, France. An arrangment of forget-me-nots frames the view at lower left and two yellow butterflies add interest at upper right. A handwritten message at lower centre: "Je vous aime" [I love you]. An inscription in graphite written onto the album leaf below this card: "E. Rimmel", suggests that the maker of the card is Eugene Rimmel. The lack of any maker's stamps on the card and the lack of clarity about the identity of the author of the inscription makes this attribution uncertain. Rimmel produced a wide variety of cards and it is possible that the scene represents one of Rimmel's 'hand-painted cards, highly artistic', which were sold for between 2/6 and 10/6 [10 shillings and sixpence] before it was mounted onto stamped card. See the following advertisement from an 1879 Drury Lane programme which lists Rimmel's range of cards: https://johnjohnsoncollectionnowandthen.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/johnson10-can-0004-0.jpg. The John Johnson Collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford contains a very large collection of valentines and related valentines material.
