Love's Offering Valentine card
Publisher:
Marcus Ward & Co.
Draughtsman:
Greenaway, Kate
(After)
A postcard-style valentine published by Marcus Ward & Co. with a border of black and gold and a pink dog-rose design. A chromolithograph, positioned off-centre to the right, shows a couple wearing 18th-century costume, collecting water lily flowers from a pond. The illustration is by Kate Greenaway (although unsigned) and appeared originally in a second volume of the anthology of love poetry, _The Quiver of Love - A Collection of Valentines Ancient and Modern_ which was published by Marcus Ward & Co. in 1880. A much larger volume of _The Quiver of Love - A Collection of Valentines Ancient and Modern_ with illustrations by both Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane, was published in 1876. In the 1880 volume, this illustration is positioned opposite the poem, _Love's Offering_, by A. Gaskell, which describes collecting water lilies from a stream. Printed at lower left corner: ENT. STA. HALL and at lower right corner: MARCUS WARD & CO. The book included three further illustrations by Greenaway, including _Spring Flowers_ , which was also reproduced as a valentine card. See P.14349-R-35, a valentine from the same series by Marcus Ward & Co. which is positioned on the same album leaf . See Frank Staff, _The Valentine and its Origins_, pp. 106-7.
