Valentine card

Small 48mo-size postcard-style valentine with applied heads. A lithograph in black and white of a couple, the man carrying a carpet bag and the woman holding a muff. Comic, glazed chromolithographed heads have replaced the original printed heads. A chromolithographed scrap of a flower wreath with motto: I HAVE / HOPE affixed at lower centre. On the verso, an inscription in graphite: "6d" [sixpence]. From a series of postcard-style valentines with comic heads. See also P.14369-R. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 85. This card was originally mounted with four other examples from the same series on the same leaf in album P.14412-R. See P.14412-R-73, P.14412-R-74 and P.14412-R-75. P.14369-R was also originally mounted here.
