Valentine card
Publisher: S. Marks & Sons
Comic valentine. A hand-coloured lithograph on white wove paper with applied textile. The upper edges have been shaped. A woman boards an omnibus, the door held open for her by a man in a grey coat. The textile skirt lifts up to reveal the hoop and lacy petticoats. A printed verse below: "Oh! Mr Conductor don't look this way, / And what you may see pray do not say, / No Miss indeed that never would pay; / I should loose all my fares 2d all the way." S. Marks & Sons / Houndsditch, London, printed at lower left and right. A duplicate of P.14345-R-25 (although each with different colouring) and from the same series as P.14345-R-23 and P.14365-R. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 83.
