Description

Hand-coloured lithograph of a flower bouquet on cream 8vo-sized paper with an embossed border. The flower bouquet is cut into a 'cobweb' device. The thread lifts to reveal a lithographed and hand-coloured scene of doves at a bird bath with the message: "Love and Friendship". A lithographed verse above and below: "Though roses, words and letters too / But feebly show my love for you ...". The design is possibly by Kershaw & Son, although there is no embossed stamp. The paper has been folded several times for delivery and the remains of green sealing wax is visible on the verso with the handwritten address: "J.E.M.W. Esq. Junr." The sender's verse (presumably a woman) is written on the right-hand inside page and dated: "Feb.y 14th 1838". Watermark: FELLOWS / 1835. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 26.
