Valentine card
Publisher: Unknown
Hand-painted silk panel (a pink rose) within gilded lace-paper with a gold-foil heart affixed at upper centre and two fan-arms attached at lower centre with chromolithographed illustrations of children and roses. A verse printed in red ink on a scroll at lower centre: "Believe me fair, I love you more / Than ever man loved maid before." The card is without a back sheet. The quality of this valentine front and the gold heart indicate the hand of Eugène Rimmel. The missing back paper would have almost certainly have been stamped with his name. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 43.
