Hymen's Gift Valentine card

Etching and engraving with hand-colouring on one sheet of white wove paper. Central image within an etched frame of a couple wearing regency dress, the woman as a bride in white, seated on a sofa and showered with golden coins from an upturned cornucopia held by Hymen who hovers in a cloud above them. Hymen's flaming torch is seen to the left and a pair of doves to the right. Decorative cornucopia crossed with flaming torches are at upper left and right and pairs of doves with baskets of flowers are at lower left and right. Engraved title below central image: HYMEN'S GIFT. Graphite inscription at upper centre: "(1822)". From a series of Hymen subjects. See also P.14410-R-6. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 6. A graphite number "6" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
