Description

Etching, engraving and hand-colouring on one sheet of white wove paper. Central image within an etched frame of a couple wearing regency dress, the woman as a bride in white, sleeping beside a shrine within a temple and secured with a golden chain by the gentleman. Hymen hovering to the left, secures the chain to the shrine with a padlock. Hymen's flaming torch is seen on the ground below the shrine. Decorative vignettes of doves with laurel branches and hearts pierced with arrows chained to flaming torches at upper and lower corners. Engraved title below central image: HYMEN'S GOLDEN CHAIN. From a series of Hymen subjects. See also P.14410-R-3. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 7. A graphite number "7" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
