Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
Hand-drawn and coloured designs of forget-me-nots, violets and Cupid's quiver and bow on embossed white wove paper with a hand-coloured edge in pink. A puzzle purse at the centre is decorated with a hand-drawn and coloured design of a wreath of pink roses and thistles and a pair of flaming hearts. The puzzle purse opens to reveal a 'cobweb' with a silk thread which lifts to reveal a hand-drawn church with doves. 'DOBBS PATENT' stamped at lower centre. Watermark: J WHATMAN / 1836. The same embossing design and similar hand-drawn elements as seen in other examples by Henry Dobbs as Dobbs Patent. See also P.14385-R, P.14386-R and P.14392-R. P.14386-R has a postmark of 1823, which suggests that the design of the hand-drawn elements and embossing die used by Dobbs Patent was largely unchanged for around fifteen years. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 19. A graphite number "19" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
