Valentine card
Publisher: Kershaw, George
Hand-coloured lithograph of flowers mounted on embossed 4to-size white wove paper, cut into a 'cobweb' device. A silk thread lifts to reveal a cupid inside a pink rose with the motto: "I flourish in the Rose". A lithographed verse is printed above and below the central image: "Thy breath is like the flowers, my love, / A perfume sweet to me. / And in Love's own fairy bowers, my love, / I fain would dwell with thee ...". Embossed stamp at lower centre: G. KERSHAW. The inside pages are blank. A clipping from a sale catalogue is affixed to the album leaf: "602 Similar Type, also by Kershaw (stamped), / equally fine, and the almost invisible / silk pull and web absolutely perfect, Ib. / 21s ...". The clipping is from a catalogue of 1924 (No. 36) from the bookseller, R.S. Frampton who was based at "Walton House", 37 Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park, London, N4. The catalogue, with several lot descriptions cut from it, was found in boxes containing Glaisher's valentines. See Valentinesarchive15. This valentine was bought at the same time as another Kershaw valentine, P.14410-R-44, which was listed as number 603 in the catalogue. This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 22. A graphite number "22" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
