Description

Gouache painting of flowers on a purple satin panel within silvered lace-paper with scalloped edges. Printed motto affixed at lower centre: LOVE AND CONSTANCY. Embossed stamp at lower right corner of right-hand inside page: E RIMMEL / PERFUMER / LONDON & PARIS. It is possible that this card is from the series of Rimmel's Shilling Valentines sold in 1875, listed as number 451 and described as 'painting on silk, silver frame'. [Ref. Rimmel price list, 'Rimmel's Perfumed Valentines', 1875, supplied by Malcolm Warrington] This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 39. A graphite number "39" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue.
