Description

Etching and hand-colouring on one sheet of thin, cream laid paper with perforated panels attempting lace-paper. A central scene within an oval etched frame of a pair of Cupids operating a grinding stone and a third Cupid hovering above and pouring water onto the stone. A river in the background with a pair of swans. Etched title and verse below: CUPIDS POINTING THEIR ARROWS. / The Sharp Arrow of Love, hath pierc'd my heart through: / From Morning till Night, I am thinking of You." This card was included in the exhibition of valentine cards, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995, no. 13. A graphite number "13" is written onto the album leaf in the lower right-hand corner, which corresponds to the numbering of the catalogue. The 1995 exhibition catalogue states: "… with the same border pattern as an example dated and postmarked 1802." The example referred to is a similar 4to-sized valentine on the subject of Cupid entitled _The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche_ which is reproduced in Frank Staff, _The Valentine & Its Origins_ (1969), no. 32, p. 36.
