Description

Hand-coloured etching and engraving on a single sheet of 4to-size cream wove paper. A couple wearing regency dress standing beside a cottage are being garlanded with flowers by Cupid on the left. A church is seen in the distance on the left. An engraved verse below: "See, Love! the Church at distance meets our view, / Where Cupid, smiling twines his wreath for you! ...". Inscriptions in graphite at upper left: "38"; "Rare" / "1822" ; "5 for 37/6". An erased graphite inscription is visible at upper centre. Watermark: J WHATMAN / 1822.
