Description

Comic valentine in the form of a mocked-up 'letter' referencing the fictional character of Sir Roger de Coverley from the satirical publication, _The Spectator_ (1711-12 and 1714). Sir Roger de Coverley exemplified the values of an old country gentleman, and was portrayed as a lovable but somewhat ridiculous character. A small card on white wove paper with a lithographed 'letter' on the front cover: "Sir Roger v....... / yourself / "Would it surprise you to know" I love and adore you / & that I am the only true man in existence & further / that I am a Claimant for / your hand and heart / and that I am just like Roger de Coverley". Inside, across both pages, is a hand-coloured lithograph of a rotund gentleman wearing 18th-century dress and with wings (presumably Roger de Coverley as Cupid) and a lady holding a fan, the caption printed below: "Just like Sir Roger de Coverley". P.14412-R-50 is a duplicate, although this example is in better condition.
