Description

Postcard-style comic valentine. A lithograph in black ink against a grey background with gilt edging and motto in gold ink below. A clergyman/lay preacher stands in profile facing left, his large stomach protruding from his cassock. A printed motto below: "Who lives a good life / Is sure to live well". One of a series and one of eight examples mounted on the same leaf in album P.14412-R. A handwritten inscription in graphite on the album leaf at lower right (the same hand as seen elsewhere in the Glaisher valentines bequest, but not belonging to Glaisher): "Original price [?9]". These inscriptions were made by Miss Catherine Parsons who was a close friend of Glaisher towards the end of his life and undertook to arrange and mount his valentine collection into albums from the Autumn of 1924 through to the Summer of the following year and beyond. See letters from Glaisher to Parsons in the Fitzwilliam Museum archive.
