Description

Small 48mo-size playing-card-style comic valentine with applied glazed chromolithographed heads. A lithograph in black and white of a pair of females, one short and fat, the other tall and thin. Coloured, comic chromolithographed heads have been affixed over the original heads. The black and white lithograph was probably intended for hand-colouring. A chromolithographed motto at upper left: SUCCESS / TO YOU. From a series of postcard-style valentines with comic heads, three examples of which are mounted on the same album leaf. Two further examples were originally mounted here but were included in the exhibition, _For ever thine: the nineteenth century valentine_, held in the Charrington Print Room at the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1995 and so have been catalogued separately. See P.14368-R and P.14369-R.
