Valentine card
Publisher: Dobbs, Henry
A comic valentine which employs a visual pun. White lace-paper with a pair of woven textile trousers with white satin waistband and silvered foil studs mounted at the centre. A handwritten motto in blue ink: 'Something / I hope you'll / never wear'. The trousers lift off the paper at the top to reveal the second part: 'Breeches of Promise'. 'DOBBS' is embossed at lower centre. The back paper is missing. P.14418-R-5 is another version of this card found in album P.14418-R, which employs the alternative spelling, 'Breaches of Promise', with the 'a' underlined to emphasise the punning relationship between 'breach' and 'breeches'. The trousers in P.14418-R-5 are made of brown and red tweed with gold foil studs. The valentines collection at the Museum of London contains three examples of this design by Dobbs with the trousers made of various materials, all with the motto spelling, 'Breeches of Promise'. See 34.170/196; 34.170/197 and 34.170/35.
