Valentine card
Publisher: J.T. Wood & Co
Loose inside album P.14412-R between nos. 21 and 36. Comic valentine on the subject of a trade. Very small, 48mo size white wove paper with embossed border and hand-coloured lithograph of a policeman holding a wooden truncheon in his left hand and pointing with his right, a figure fleeing in the background. Printed verse below: "Move on young man don't bother me / about your fond affection / In your peeler's coat a thief I see / you'll not escape detection.". A 'peeler' was a slang term for a member of the Metropolitan Police Force established by Sir Robert Peel in 1828. Peel proposed that senior uniformed ranks should be filled from below and not brought in from the higher social classes, hence the implication in the verse that the policeman is a 'thief'. The inside pages are blank. "WOOD" embossed (faintly) at lower right. One of a series of small comic cards by J.T. Wood with embossed borders and hand-coloured lithographs on the subject of trades, sixteen of which are mounted as a group in album P.14412-R, along with three loose duplicates. This is a duplicate of P.14412-R-34.
