Design for a valentine. Drawing in pen and black ink with watercolour on a small sheet of white wove paper which is mounted onto a slightly larger sheet of cream wove paper. A shell sail boat containing a pair of lovers is blown along by Cupid who flies behind. A hand-written verse in brown ink below: 'Over a sunlit sea / my Love! / Come sail, come sail with me / my Love! / a pearly shell / will bear us well / and pleasant it will be / my Love! ...'. '12' is written in brown ink at the upper right corner in the same hand as the verse. An embossed stamp of a shield at upper left. An inscription in graphite is written onto the secondary support at lower centre (presumably by the artist): 'M.S. by _E.G._'. The initials 'E.G.' stand for British lithographer, Edward Gilks. This design was produced as a hand-coloured lithograph as seen in P.14414-R-113, which probably represents the finished valentine as the border of the paper has been embossed. P.14414-R-112 is mounted with a group of designs for valentines by Gilks in album P.14414-R. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836 and 1843 or between 1844 and 1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London. Other designs by Gilks are contained in album P.14346-R.
