Valentine card
Printmaker:
Gilks, Edward
Designer:
attributed to
A lithographed valentine design in brown ink on a single sheet of 4to-size thin, white wove paper. A reversed and upside-down offset image overlays the darker print. A scrolling border with doves at left and right corners and entwining vines and flowers with roundels containing putti with lyres and two large roses at lower centre. At the centre is an image of Cupid sitting below a tree on which hangs a birdcage containing a heart with wings. The cage door is open and another heart with wings has flown out of it. A lithographed verse above and below the central image: ''Long have I mark'd your kind attentions shown, / almost exclusively to me alone / Nor have I mark'd each sign / Of such regards without an equal share / Of warmth for you & thus the truth declare / In this my Valentine'. The design is unsigned, although the style is comparable with other valentine designs signed by British lithographer, Edward Gilks with which P.14414-R-119 is grouped in album P.14414-R. As Gilks emigrated to Australia in 1852, this design is most likely to have been produced either during Gilks's apprenticeship in London to Thomas Dean, between 1836 and 1843 or between 1844 and 1850 when he was in partnership with his brother Thomas, a wood-engraver, based at 4 Fenchurch Building, Fenchurch, London.
